~The Song of Deer as taught to Jade Wah’oo Grigori by his Ancestral Spirits
There are many stories of the deer spirit, or spirit deer. One coming from the Cherokee is that man once hunted animals only for food, but when the bow and arrow was made, they began to hunt when their hunger did not demand food. The animals were afraid and they met to try to determine what to do. The bears wanted to strike back with violence. They chose to become proficient with the same weapons. That did not work. So the animals met again and Awi Usdi, the deer who believed in the peace between all living things said that humans could kill for hunger only and after which could ask forgiveness from the Great Spirit. If they did not do this, he would use his magic to cripple them so they could not walk or hunt. He spoke to the hunters in their sleep and most did as his vision requested. Some did not, and continued to kill without need. The deer spirit struck them down with rheumatism until they did as he requested. And humans and animals live in harmony to this day, although they no longer speak to each other as they did long ago.
